SARSmart Programs

SARSmart Cold Water Awareness

Most of Canada’s water remains cold year-round, especially in the north when it isn’t frozen. Cold water is a major contributor to drowning deaths each year, but with the proper education and tools, you can improve your chances of survival of a cold-water immersion. To raise awareness of the harsh realities of cold water, the SARSmart Cold Water Awareness Bootcamp was created to provide first-hand experiences with its effects. You’ll also hear from fellow Canadians who have experienced cold-water immersions and learn how to better prepare for a similar situation.

Northern Youth SuperSAR

Northern Youth SuperSAR (NYSS) is an educational experience designed for youth and adults, integrating safety and preparedness into their daily activities—whether on land or water—year-round. The program offers three age-appropriate seasonal presentations with classroom exercises, providing essential knowledge on how to prepare for and respond to emergencies. This is especially valuable in regions of Canada where unique challenges exist, and search and rescue (SAR) may not be readily available. Youth are encouraged to share their knowledge and apply the fundamental SAR principles they learn to their everyday lives.

Northern Youth Ambassadors

Northern Youth Ambassadors (NYA) is an extension of Operation Life Preserver (OLP), designed to empower youth with knowledge of the four pillars of boating safety presented in OLP so they can share this information with their friends and family.

NYA is an excellent program for senior leadership classes and Junior Canadian Rangers eager to educate others on the importance of staying safe on the water. Primary, junior, and senior presentations are available upon free registration. These resources can be downloaded and used to teach youth how to deliver this critical, potentially lifesaving information to others.

Operation Life Preserver

Operation Life Preserver (OLP) is a program designed to educate youth and adults on four key topics (the four pillars) of boating safety and preparedness in case of accidental immersion. The program focuses on the importance of wearing a lifejacket, understanding the realities of cold water, making a simple rope ladder to reboard a boat, and leaving a brief trip plan with a responsible person. OLP delivers this information in a fun yet informative way, ensuring it sticks and helps keep you and those you teach safe on every boating adventure.
